Constable Atii Napa sat behind the wheel of her patrol car and sipped from a paper cup of what had to be the worst coffee in Greenland. She glanced at the radio when she heard Petra’s voice and then reached out to turn up the volume.

This is Jensen…

Atii popped the lid onto the coffee cup and squirmed it into the holder in the dash.

We have a problem.

While Petra might have been the unlucky one, drawing all the mall shifts, and thus taking the most undesirable assignments for the team, for four Sundays in a row, Atii had not escaped Duneq’s scheduling demands completely. She stuffed the dark blue patrol car into gear and tightened her seatbelt. It didn’t matter which route she took to the mall. All the roads were icy, packed as they were with layer upon layer of slick snow. The patrol car was equipped with winter tyres, and Atii was confident that she had the skills to cope with whatever driving conditions winter might throw at her, but the note of concern in Petra’s voice during her second transmission gave her pause.

They’re on motocross bikes…

Atii frowned, furrowing her brow just like Petra.

And the reindeer are bolting.

“Reindeer?”

Atii shook her head and then stared at the radio as Petra finished her transmission.

I’m in pursuit.

“Of the reindeer…?”

Say again, Jensen.

Atii fiddled with the volume on the radio, compensating for the louder boom of the despatcher’s voice, and the scratchier, wind-distorted words from her partner and friend.

…ursuit.

“Come on, P. Tell me where you are,” Atii said, before holding her breath as Petra responded.

…the sleigh.

Atii shook her head one more time to clear it and then grabbed the radio handset.

“This is Napa,” she said, keying the mic. “I’m on my way.”

Atii clipped the handset to the dash, flicked on the sirens and the emergency lights, and accelerated away from the kiosk serving Greenland’s worst coffee, and turned onto Aqqusinersuaq, heading towards the centre of Nuuk.

The thought that Petra was in pursuit didn’t bother her as much as the comments about reindeer bolting and something about a sleigh. It made no sense until Atii remembered the segment on the TV news, about Petra escorting a small herd of reindeer – a team at the very least – along the streets of Nuuk to the mall. Petra was supposed to be policing the mall on foot.

“So, if she’s in pursuit…”

Atii slowed the patrol car to slip through a narrow gap between two vehicles and then accelerated once more. She paused again, standing on the brakes when she reached the end of the road – harder than intended – to avoid hitting one of three motocross bikes, followed by something she never thought she would ever see – not in her lifetime, and never on the streets of Greenland’s capital city.

“Oh, P…” Atii said, staring as she gripped the wheel. “What are you doing?”
